UK Vacancies Hit 2025 Low Amid Christmas Rush

Vacancies Sink to Multi-Year Low

Britain's job market kept cooling, with the Office for National Statistics reporting 717,000 openings in July-September 2025, down 9,000 (1.3%) from the previous quarter. This was the 39th consecutive period in which vacancies fell compared with the previous three months.

Total vacancies fell 115,000 (13.8%) year-over-year and now sit 78,000 positions (9.8%) below pre-coronavirus January-March 2020 levels. Vacancies have fallen by an estimated 583,000 since their peak in March-May 2022, at the height of the post-pandemic hiring boom.

The number of unemployed people per vacancy rose to 2.4 in June-August 2025, up from 2.3 in the previous quarter and 1.7 a year earlier. More jobseekers per opening shifts negotiating power from candidates to employers across the UK.

The UK unemployment rate reached 4.8% for people aged 16+ in June-August 2025, up on the previous quarter. Separate HMRC data showed payrolled employees fell by 10,000 in September 2025, an early estimate that is likely to be revised.

The vacancy fall wasn't uniform across sectors. Vacancies fell in half of the 18 industry sectors tracked by the ONS. Human health and social work saw the largest drop by volume (10,000), real estate saw the largest drop by percentage (20.6%), and accommodation and food services fell by 5,000.

Update (September 2026): the latest ONS labour market figures show vacancies at 702,000 in June-August 2026, down 8,000 (1.1%) on the quarter, so the slow decline has continued into 2026.

Festive Hiring Provides Seasonal Lifeline

Amid the broader gloom, Britain's retail sector is mounting big Christmas recruitment drives—a crucial lifeline for workers squeezed by persistent cost-of-living pressures. Tesco announced plans to hire more than 28,500 temporary staff across Superstores and Extra stores, covering early morning, day, and evening shifts for roles spanning customer service, shelf stocking, and online order fulfillment.

Sainsbury's and Argos unveiled recruitment for approximately 19,000 seasonal workers—17,000 at Sainsbury's and 2,000 at Argos. The retailers are offering competitive compensation with store and warehouse roles paying £12.60-£13.85 per hour depending on location, while delivery drivers earn £13.60-£15.35 hourly. Staff perks include free food during shifts and a 10% staff discount, rising to 15% on Fridays and Saturdays at Sainsbury's and on payday at Argos.

Amazon is hiring more than 15,000 seasonal positions across UK fulfillment centers, with operations roles starting at £14.30 per hour, rising to £15.30 depending on location, according to the company.

The seasonal surge extends beyond retail giants, with hospitality venues, logistics providers, and delivery services also taking on extra temporary staff. Holiday jobs made up 0.6% of all UK jobs posted on Indeed as of 3 October 2025, up 16% on a year earlier, though still behind 2023 and the pre-pandemic years of 2018 and 2019.

Top seasonal job titles include common retail roles such as sales associates, assistants, merchandisers, and advisors. Most festive jobs run through the November-January peak.

Cost-of-Living Crisis Fuels Job Search Surge

Interest in festive work is unusually high. Searches for Christmas jobs made up 0.8% of all UK job searches on Indeed as of 3 October 2025, up 28% on a year earlier and the highest level for that time of year since at least 2018. Indeed senior economist Jack Kennedy said "cost of living pressures and limited opportunities across the jobs market generally" may be driving the interest.

Seasonal roles tend to appeal to people looking for extra household income or flexible, part-time hours. Festive expenses add pressure on household budgets that are already stretched.

For retailers, elevated candidate interest presents both opportunity and challenge. While strong applicant pools make filling positions easier, heightened competition among jobseekers signals underlying economic fragility that could dampen consumer spending during the critical holiday shopping season.

Applications for seasonal roles often open in early autumn, with Sainsbury's announcing its drive on 6 October 2025. Most positions run through December and early January, and strong seasonal staff may find a route to longer-term work.

The contrast between falling overall vacancies and large Christmas hiring drives underscores the UK labor market's bifurcated reality: employers remain cautious about long-term commitments amid economic uncertainty, yet still need massive temporary workforces to meet predictable seasonal demand. For jobseekers, festive roles offer immediate income opportunities in an otherwise challenging environment, with potential doorways to more stable employment for those who excel during the holiday rush.
