HubSpot is reducing the size of its team by about 7% and saying goodbye to nearly 660 HubSpotters, under a plan its Board of Directors authorized on October 1, 2026 and set out for staff in a CEO update dated October 6, 2026. Departing staff will generally get 20 weeks of base pay plus a week for each year of service, up to 30 weeks, along with a COBRA lump sum in the U.S. or Modern Health globally, career transition help and the option to keep their laptops. For Metaintro readers, the useful detail sits in two primary documents, the CEO memo and the securities filing, which together spell out what affected workers are being offered, when the cuts finish and what the company does and does not name as the cause. Here is that detail, plus the federal COBRA rules and how Massachusetts treats severance when you claim unemployment.

What Did HubSpot Announce, and Who Is Affected?

The news came from the Cambridge, Massachusetts tech company on Tuesday in a letter to employees from its chief executive, Yamini Rangan. HubSpot is reducing its team by ~7% and will be saying goodbye to nearly 660 HubSpotters, under a plan impacting approximately 7% of the Company's workforce through the elimination of certain roles.

HubSpot did not say how many employees in Massachusetts will be affected, and the company has more than 9,000 employees, 306,000 customers, and 15 offices around the world, with its global headquarters in Cambridge.

Impacted employees in the U.S. were due to get an email within the next 15 minutes with information and support, while in other countries, this process will vary based on local laws and practices. U.S. employees whose roles were not affected were also due to receive confirmation from the People team within the next 15 minutes.

Every departing HubSpotter will also have the opportunity to speak 1:1 with a HubSpot Manager within the next day of the memo going out, because, in Rangan's words, an email cannot answer every question.

What Severance and Support Will Departing HubSpotters Get?

HubSpot's transition support will vary by region based on global requirements, but will generally include the following items.

The severance formula rewards tenure, since the base starts at 20 weeks of base pay and adds a week for each year of service until it reaches the 30 week maximum. These are terms the package will generally include, so every worker should check the version in their own letter.

Everyone will have access to six months of career transition outplacement services to help with their job search, CEO Yamini Rangan wrote, according to the HubSpot CEO memo to employees.

What Does the SEC Filing Add to the CEO Memo?

HubSpot estimates charges of approximately $65 million to $75 million, consisting primarily of future cash expenditures related to severance, notice period, employee transition and benefits payments.

The company expects to recognize the majority of these charges in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026. It expects the role eliminations to be substantially complete by the end of the first quarter of fiscal year 2027, subject to local law and consultation requirements, with substantially all related cash payments made by June 30, 2027.

Rangan added that the process and timing will differ by country based on local requirements.

Actual expenses may differ materially from the estimates disclosed, so the cost range is an estimate rather than a final bill.

Is HubSpot's Business Still Growing?

In the October filing, HubSpot reaffirms its revenue, non-GAAP operating income, and non-GAAP net income per common share guidance for the third quarter and for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2026, and says it remains confident in achieving its longer-term operating margin targets shared at its Analyst Day on September 17, 2026.

Its August 5, 2026 quarterly release showed total revenue of $911.7 million, up 20% on an as-reported basis for the second quarter of 2026. The company grew customers to 306,446 as of June 30, 2026, up 14%, and guided third quarter revenue to the range of $924.0 million to $925.0 million.

HubSpot stock was down more than 43% this year when Fast Company reported the cuts. HubSpot was removed from the FTSE All-World Index (USD) last month after a decline in its stock price, according to a Simply Wall St report cited by Fast Company. On the day of the news, shares rose over 1% before the market opened, then were down again by 1.57% as of midday trading.

Why Is HubSpot Reorganizing, and Is AI the Reason?

Over the past year, HubSpot has shifted its strategy from building software that helps customers grow to delivering outcomes for them with AI, a shift that is transforming product, pricing and how it serves customers.

Rangan listed three changes to how HubSpot operates. Product teams will be organized around outcomes such as generate demand, win deals, delight customers, and scale growth instead of Hubs, with each team owning the full customer journey. HubSpot will reduce management layers and move decisions closer to the people doing the work, and it will reduce fragmented ownership so teams can make decisions and execute with speed and clarity. The plan is designed to create a flatter, faster organization.

Rangan wrote that this is not driven by AI-related efficiencies, and tied the change to aligning the organization with the strategy. She added that this is not simply a cost-cutting exercise, and that HubSpot has been disciplined about growing headcount slower than revenue.

This is not driven by AI-related efficiencies. We believe in a world where AI helps make us more productive and we will continue to invest to make that happen, CEO Yamini Rangan wrote, according to HubSpot's company news page.

AI is still behind the sweeping changes, a Fast Company analysis argues, pointing to months of investor questions about whether AI will reduce the need for businesses to pay for software like HubSpot's. In August, Rangan blamed AI for why the company got off to a slow start in April as it was trying to adjust its product and pricing, Fast Company noted.

The company's own words rule out AI efficiency gains as the driver, while its strategy is delivering outcomes for customers with AI, and its August release quotes Rangan on deliberate choices to accelerate HubSpot's AI transformation. Rangan's stated reason is aligning the organization with HubSpot's strategy, and she does not say software now does the affected jobs.

How Did HubSpot Decide Which Roles to Cut?

HubSpot defined the structure, roles and capabilities it needs, and then assessed every role against the same six criteria, with the reduction the outcome of that work, not the starting point.

The six criteria are these.

The layers and spans test fits the memo's plan to build a flatter organization with fewer layers. Another asks Are we protecting our capacity to generate demand and drive revenue?, though the memo does not say which teams lost the most roles. Removing management layers, often called flattening, is a wider trend explained in Why Companies Are Cutting Middle Managers and What It Means for Your Career.

How Does U.S. Health Coverage Work After the Lump Sum?

HubSpot's U.S. offer is COBRA (5 months as a lump sum), and the memo does not say how that lump sum is calculated, so check it against your actual premium.

Under Department of Labor COBRA guidance, you usually pay the full premium for COBRA, which includes both the share you paid as an employee and the amount your employer contributed, plus two percent. For a termination other than for gross misconduct, the maximum period of continuation coverage is 18 months for the employee, spouse and dependent child, which can be extended in certain circumstances, such as a disability extension to a total maximum of 29 months or a second qualifying event to a total maximum of 36 months.

The deadlines are the part to put in a calendar. You have 60 days to enroll in COBRA, counted from when coverage ends or when the election notice is provided or mailed, whichever is later, and then 45 days to make your first payment.

You may qualify for a spouse's, parent's or dependent's plan if you use a special enrollment right within 30 days of losing your job-based health plan, and on the Health Insurance Marketplace you must select a plan within 60 days of losing your job-based coverage. Comparing those against COBRA before the lump sum is spent is worth an hour of your time.

Does Severance Delay Unemployment Benefits in Massachusetts?

This section covers Massachusetts claims only, where the answer depends on how the payment is structured. Under the state's rules, as explained by Mass Legal Services, severance granted unconditionally (that is, without requiring the employee to release claims against the employer) will disqualify the employee for the period it covers.

The benefit year is extended by the number of weeks in which the employee's severance pay was disqualifying.

An agreement to take payment upon separation in return for the employee's release of claims against the employer will not disqualify the claimant from receiving UI concurrently with that payment. The HubSpot memo does not say whether its severance is tied to a release, so read your own agreement.

Is HubSpot Still Hiring After the Cuts?

HubSpot's current all openings page shows the message No jobs are currently listed, and points visitors to a Talent Community where, when roles open up, the company uses submitted information to reach out when there is a match.

The plan is designed to give HubSpot the resources to invest in the biggest opportunities, and Rangan told staff they would spend time together the following week talking about the organization HubSpot is building.

In January 2023, HubSpot also moved to cut the size of its team by 7%, approximately 500 HubSpotters, citing a slowdown in business at the time.

What This Means for Job Seekers, and What Should You Do Next?

Our take is that the people leaving should use every part of this package, because the health and outplacement pieces have a clock on them. The six months of career transition outplacement services and the 5 months of COBRA as a lump sum buy time, and the severance formula of 20 weeks of base pay plus a week for each year of service gives longer-serving staff a real cushion. HubSpot judged roles on strategic need, layers and spans, revenue, capability, capacity and leadership, and the reduction was the outcome of that work, not the starting point. Rangan also told departing staff I am deeply sorry and Your work here mattered, and those words are worth keeping in mind as you start the search.
