Nurses and Pharmacy Professionals in Ghana Can Apply for 465 Health Posts That Earlier Recruits Did Not Take Up
Ghana is filling 465 health posts, 429 for nurses and 36 for pharmacy staff, in a mop-up scheduled for October 5. See where the slots are and how to apply.

Ghana's Ministry of Health is holding a mop-up recruitment for 465 nursing and pharmacy vacancies, scheduled for Monday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m. GMT. The posts were vacated by applicants who failed to turn up at their assigned districts and health facilities, and the mop-up is meant to fill them with nurses, pharmacists and pharmacist technicians. For Metaintro readers, the useful detail sits outside the notice itself, in how the ministry's posting process works, what the nursing and pharmacy regulators require, and what went wrong on the portal in May. Here is that detail, slot by slot.
What Did Ghana's Ministry of Health Announce for October 5?
The notice was issued on October 3 and signed by spokesperson Tony Goodman. The exercise is meant to replace applicants who did not turn up at the facilities and districts to which they had been posted.
The vacancies are spread across teaching hospitals, Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) facilities and the Ghana Health Service. Applicants are directed to the Ministry of Health recruitment portal, and anyone who needs help can call 0557208487 or 0557385895.
Eligible applicants were urged to take note of the recruitment date and time and to complete their applications through the designated portal. No closing date and no list of required documents appear in the notice as printed in the Myjoyonline story, the Citi Newsroom story, the Adom Online story and the Graphic Online story.
The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the general public and all prospective applicants that it will undertake a nationwide mop-up recruitment exercise to replace applicants who have refused to report to their various selected districts and facilities, spokesperson Tony Goodman's statement read, according to the Citi Newsroom report.
Where Are the 429 Nursing Posts and 36 Pharmacy Posts?
Nursing makes up 429 of the vacancies, with 266 posts in teaching hospitals, 133 in CHAG facilities and 30 under the Ghana Health Service.
- Teaching hospitals. Teaching hospitals hold 266 nursing vacancies.
- CHAG facilities. CHAG facilities hold 133 nursing posts.
- Ghana Health Service. The Ghana Health Service has 30 nursing vacancies.
- Pharmacy. The remaining 36 vacancies are for pharmacy professionals, including five pharmacist positions and 31 pharmacist technician positions.
One number differs between outlets. The Graphic Online headline and its text give a total of 432 slots, but the same story lists 429 nursing slots and 36 pharmacy slots, the same split that Adom Online gives for its 465 vacancies.
No breakdown of the nursing posts by grade, region or district appears in the Myjoyonline story, the Citi Newsroom story, the Adom Online story or the Graphic Online version of the notice, and none of them names a teaching hospital. Teaching hospitals and specialised institutions, including psychiatric hospitals, were intentionally left out of the main recruitment portal in May, to prevent applicants from concentrating only in urban facilities at the expense of rural postings. At the time, the ministry planned a mop-up that would include positions at teaching and psychiatric hospitals.
What Happened to Recruits Who Did Not Report in August?
In August, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh gave newly posted professionals until Thursday, August 20, 2026, to take up duty or risk losing their appointments. The aim was to fill vacancies created by health professionals who fail to take up their postings without delaying deployment.
The ministry later extended the reporting deadline for recently recruited nurses and allied health professionals to August 31, 2026, calling it the final extension. Professionals who missed it without an approved and justifiable reason would have their names removed from the recruitment and posting system.
In August, those vacancies were to be filled by a mop-up exercise scheduled for the first week of September 2026.
If you don’t go after the 20th, it means that you will not go and you may forfeit that opportunity, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said in August, according to the Citi Newsroom account of the meeting.
How Does a Posting Move From Application to First Salary?
The ministry set out its own process in August, when it extended the deadline for recruits. Here is the order it gave.
- Clearance first. The ministry receives financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance before opening the recruitment portal for eligible applicants.
- Apply and interview. Applicants apply for postings to their preferred districts and undergo interviews in their respective districts.
- Accept and start. Successful applicants accept their postings, and their assigned facilities confirm their assumption of duty and submit the required documentation to the Ghana Health Service, CHAG and other relevant agencies.
- Appointment letter. The relevant agency then generates an appointment letter so the applicant can complete the processes required for salary input.
- Pay. The facility validates the worker's salary before payment is effected by the Controller and Accountant-General's Department.
In May, the ministry's human resources director explained that the district interview is basically to confirm the documentation of the professionals and their readiness to start work. By August, recruits who took up duty early had already received salaries, and the minister tied that to securing financial clearance before recruitment began, so that arrears would not pile up.
What Do Nurses Need From the Nursing and Midwifery Council?
Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana is the procedure a nurse goes through to practise legally in the country. After passing the Council's licensing examination, a nurse goes to the Council's Regional Office in the region where the training institution is located, presents the results slip, completes a registration form and pays a non-refundable registration fee.
The nurse is then issued with a Log Book for rotation and a Provisional License and Code for National Service registration. After the rotation or national service, the log book and provisional licence go back to the regional office, and the nurse awaits the PIN and Certificate of Registration. The Council issues Professional Identification Numbers (PIN) to Nurses and Midwives when registration is complete, and Nurse Assistants receive an Auxiliary Identification Number (AIN).
Registration assures employers that a nurse has the qualifications needed to practice and has not had his or her name removed from the Register for misconduct. Which registration stage an applicant must have reached is missing from the Adom Online story on the mop-up notice, so keep your PIN or provisional licence and your results slip to hand for any district document check.
What Do Pharmacists and Pharmacist Technicians Need?
For the five pharmacist posts, the licence matters. A pharmacist on the Permanent Register is required by law to be in good standing with the Pharmacy Council of Ghana in order to practice, which involves renewing the licence once every year. The Council's Board sets the renewal requirements, which are subject to change, and they are 10 CPD points in the previous year, the prescribed forms and the required fee.
For the 31 pharmacist technician posts, the closest registration route we found at the Pharmacy Council is for Pharmacy Technicians. The Ghana Pharmacy Technician Certifying Examination is part of the requirements for registration as a Pharmacy Technician in Ghana under the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013. The July 2026 sitting was scheduled for Monday, 13th July, 2026.
First-time candidates for that examination submit evidence of online registration, a duly completed GPTCE Registration Form, proof of payment of the GHS 200.00 fee, a certified copy of the Higher National Diploma in Dispensing Technology, a National Service Certificate, an Experiential Training Report from the hospital and a valid Ghana Card. The Experiential Training Report must be duly signed and stamped by the preceptor or supervisor, who must be a pharmacist in good standing. To apply, a candidate needs a Permanent Intern Code and password for the Council's practitioner portal. Whether pharmacist technician applicants must already hold that registration is missing from the Adom Online story on the mop-up notice.
What Is CHAG, the Network Behind 133 of the Nursing Posts?
The Christian Health Association of Ghana is a network of 374 Christian faith-based health facilities and health training institutions owned by 32 different church denominations. It works closely with the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service as a partner in meeting the country's health needs.
The CHAG network delivers about 30% of health services at the outpatient department (OPD) level with barely 7.5% of the nation's health infrastructure, and it has served deprived communities since 1967, CHAG says.
In the ministry's posting process, facilities submit the required documentation to the Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana and other relevant agencies, and the relevant agency generates the appointment letter.
How Does This Fit With the 7,551 Health Workers Recruited in May?
Earlier this year, the ministry recruited 7,551 healthcare professionals, a figure published on 19 May 2026, as part of the 8,000 financial clearance slots granted by the Ministry of Finance in April. That group was made up of 6,245 nurses and midwives, 771 allied health professionals, 235 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and 300 physician assistants and certified registered anaesthetists.
Nurses and midwives took 6,245 of the allocated 6,500 slots, and pharmacists and pharmacy technicians took 235 of 250. At that point, 87 vacancies remained unfilled on the portal, mainly for Registered Public Health Nurses, Mental Health Nurses and five Certified Registered Anaesthetists in northern districts.
The ministry put the backlog at about 105,000 unemployed health professionals, some of whom have been awaiting recruitment since 2018 and 2019. Registered General Nurses were the largest applicant group nationwide with 4,158 applications in the May exercise.
What Went Wrong on the Portal in May, and How Can You Prepare?
Many applicants were not able to apply when the portal opened in May. Applicants trying to get in after it first opened on May 4, 2026 described the system telling them there were no slots available the moment they logged on. It went live at 10 am each day, and Greater Accra and Eastern regions recorded 217 applications within the first five minutes of the portal opening.
On May 27, the date set for an earlier mop-up for validation and posting, the portal showed a 503 Service Unavailable error. That earlier exercise had given May 21 to May 25 for updating personal profiles, including a passport size picture, for those who had not done that yet.
Two practical steps can help before you log on.
- Check the address. The portal address printed by Graphic Online is mohrecruitment.com, the same address as the portal that was down on May 27. The address also appears as mohrrecruitment.com, with a double r, in the Myjoyonline story, the Citi Newsroom story and the Adom Online story. If the address does not load, call the helpline rather than guessing at other addresses.
- Update your record now. In May, the ministry advised professionals to regularly update their records on the recruitment portal instead of waiting for recruitment announcements.
Watch for fraud too. Responding to allegations of fraud and illegal collection of monies in May, the ministry cautioned health professionals against dealing with fraudsters, and some criminal activities recorded during the recruitment exercise were under investigation. Never pay anyone for a posting, and read how to spot AI job scams before you share documents with a stranger.
What This Means for Nurses and Pharmacy Professionals, and What Should You Do Next?
Our take is that this is a targeted mop-up of 465 posts rather than a new recruitment round. In May, applicants described the portal showing no slots the moment they logged on. Teaching hospitals hold 266 of the nursing posts, and pharmacists have five pharmacist positions.
A posting also comes with a duty to turn up. The August 20 warning and the August 31 final deadline show that a recruit who does not take up a post can lose it, so only choose a district or facility you can actually move to.
Here is what we would do:
- Apply early. The exercise was scheduled for 11:00 GMT on Monday, October 5, and in May the Greater Accra and Eastern regions logged 217 applications within the first five minutes.
- Have your documents ready. Nurses should keep their PIN or provisional licence at hand, pharmacists proof that their licence is in good standing with the Pharmacy Council, and pharmacist technician applicants any Pharmacy Technician certifying examination results or registration they hold.
- Be ready for a district check. In the main exercise, the district interview was there to confirm documentation and readiness to start work. If you are called for one, have your papers in order, and for wider practice you can use these nursing interview questions and answers.
- Use the helplines. If the portal fails, call 0557208487 or 0557385895 rather than relying on third parties.
- Never pay anyone. The ministry warned against fraudsters in May, so treat any request for money as a red flag.
