Etsy Cut 220 Jobs the Same Week It Beat Earnings and Raised Guidance

Etsy cut 220 roles days after posting 668 million dollars in revenue and authorising a 2 billion dollar buyback. Why strong results no longer protect a job.

Etsy is saying goodbye to approximately 220 colleagues, with most of the changes concentrated in product and engineering, according to the memo chief executive Kruti Patel Goyal filed with the company's 8-K. The timing is what makes this one worth studying. In the same announcement, Etsy reported 668 million dollars in quarterly revenue and authorised a 2 billion dollar share repurchase. At Metaintro, we track roughly 50 million job postings, and the pattern this represents matters more than the headcount. Strong results no longer function as protection.

What Exactly Did Etsy Announce?

Two things at once, which is why the coverage has been confusing. On the financial side, Etsy marketplace gross merchandise sales reached 2.6 billion dollars in the second quarter, up 7.5 percent year over year. Revenue came in at 668 million dollars, up 9.3 percent, with net income of 114 million dollars and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of 195 million dollars at a 29.2 percent margin. Take rate rose to 25.9 percent, up 130 basis points.

On the organisational side, roughly 220 people are leaving. After the restructuring, Etsy expects headcount of approximately 1,600 people, and the plan is expected to be substantially complete by the end of the third quarter. That places the reduction at a little over one in nine of the workforce, concentrated in the functions that build the product rather than in support roles.

The company also completed the sale of Depop, which brings approximately 1.4 billion dollars in cash into the business in the third quarter. A company with that much incoming cash and a rising margin is not restructuring out of financial distress, which makes the stated reasoning worth reading closely rather than assuming.

Why Would a Company That Beat Expectations Cut Jobs at All?

Because the reorganisation is about the shape of the team rather than the size of the cost base, at least according to the company. Patel Goyal wrote that the decision reflects where the business needs to go next rather than any single reporting period, describing it as a matter "of this quarter or even this year, but of where Etsy needs to go next", and framed acting from a position of strength as the point rather than a coincidence. The memo says leaders were asked to design the teams they believed were best positioned to deliver future work, and only then considered how each person's skills, experience and performance aligned with those roles.

The stated trigger is planning season. The memo notes that the company is getting ready to plan for 2027 and did not want to ask teams to build those plans around an organisation it already knew needed to change. That detail is more useful to employees than it first appears, because it means the highest risk window in a restructuring of this type is the quarter before annual planning rather than the quarter after a bad result. Watching for a strategy refresh or a new functional leader is a better early signal than watching the revenue line.

This is a meaningfully different logic from the layoffs that dominated the past two years, most of which were explicitly framed as cost correction after over hiring. It is also becoming more common. We saw a version of it when Zillow cut hundreds of roles while describing the move as building a disciplined cost structure, and the broader pattern is visible across our 2026 tech layoffs tracker.

For anyone employed at a profitable company, the uncomfortable implication is that financial health is no longer a reliable signal about job security. The relevant question has shifted from whether your employer can afford you to whether your role sits inside the structure the company is building next. Those are very different questions, and only the second one is worth planning around.

What Did Etsy Say the Cuts Were Not About?

Two things explicitly, and both denials are unusually direct. On cost, the memo states that "cost savings are a consequence of these changes, but they are not the objective," adding that the company did not start the work with a cost reduction target or a goal of making Etsy smaller. It also says employees will "continue to see us invest in the business and the team and hire in areas that are important to our long-term strategy", which is a commitment a company making a pure cost cut would have little reason to offer.

The second denial is the more notable one given the current climate. On automation, Patel Goyal wrote that "our future depends on the creativity, judgment, and expertise of our people" and that the opportunity is "to combine talented people with powerful new technology and not replace one with the other". That runs against the prevailing direction of corporate messaging, where naming automation has become a way to signal efficiency to investors. Our tracker of companies that cited AI in their 2026 layoffs shows how many have gone the other way.

The memo does not claim AI is irrelevant. It says that AI is changing how everyone works and that "the skills we need, the ways we work together, and the capabilities we build across Etsy must evolve as well". Read carefully, that is a statement about changing skill requirements rather than headcount replacement, and for a job seeker the distinction is practical. Roles are not being deleted so much as redefined, which means the useful response is demonstrating the newer capability rather than defending the older one.

Does the Guidance Change Tell a Different Story Than the Memo?

It adds a layer the memo does not emphasise, and both things can be true at once. Etsy raised its full year adjusted margin outlook to 29 to 30 percent, up from a prior outlook of 28 to 30 percent. The shareholder letter states directly that the company expects "the restructuring to lower operating costs in the near-term, and have incorporated the expected benefit into our increased full-year adjusted EBITDA margin outlook".

So cost savings were not the stated objective, and the savings were still real enough to be banked into guidance within days. That is not a contradiction, but it is a useful reminder for employees reading any restructuring announcement. What a company tells staff about motive and what it tells investors about financial effect are written for different audiences, and the investor document is usually the more literal of the two.

The practical takeaway is to read both documents when your employer restructures. The staff memo explains intent, the shareholder letter and any regulatory filing explain consequence, and the gap between them is where you learn how durable the change is likely to be. Our guide to what it actually costs a company to replace a worker covers why those numbers rarely favour repeated cutting.

How Does Etsy's Severance Compare With the Rest of the Market?

It is at the generous end, and worth knowing as a benchmark. Departing staff receive at least 16 weeks of severance pay with additional pay based on tenure, continued healthcare support for up to 12 months or a cash stipend in non US markets, a cash payment recognising 2026 incentive compensation and near term equity vesting, payment for accrued and unused paid time off, and immigration support.

Several of those elements are frequently missing from standard packages. Near term equity vesting matters enormously for anyone with unvested stock, immigration support is decisive for visa holders whose status is tied to employment, and a full year of healthcare removes the most stressful variable in a US job loss. For comparison, we covered the extended severance package offered in one Microsoft round, which sits at the top of the range, and our guide to outplacement and negotiating a severance package explains which components are genuinely negotiable.

If you are ever in this position, the components to check first are healthcare duration, equity treatment and whether the notice period runs concurrently with severance. Those three swing the real value of a package far more than the headline number of weeks. It is also worth knowing that many people leave money on the table by not filing for unemployment benefits at all, a pattern we examined in why laid off workers skip filing.

What Does This Mean for Your Career if You Work in Product or Engineering?

It means the concentration is the signal, not the total. Most of Etsy's 220 cuts landed in product and engineering, the same functions that absorbed the heaviest hiring during the growth years. When a company reorganises for a new phase, the teams built for the previous phase are the ones that get redrawn, and that is true even when the business is performing well.

The defensive move is to make your work legible in terms of outcomes rather than activity. In a reorganisation driven by future team design, leaders are matching people to roles that are being newly defined, so the people who are easiest to place are the ones whose contribution maps onto a problem the company still needs solved. Being excellent at maintaining something the company is moving away from is a weaker position than being adequate at something it is moving toward.

The offensive move is to treat this as market intelligence about where product and engineering demand is heading. Etsy's own memo says it will "continue to see us invest in the business and the team and hire in areas that are important to our long-term strategy", and companies in this position are usually hiring and cutting simultaneously. Our analysis of where the biggest AI spenders are hiring fastest tracks which capabilities those budgets are chasing, and certifications remain the cheapest way to evidence a new skill without stepping out of work.

If you have just been affected, give yourself an accurate frame. Being cut in a restructuring that the company itself describes as unrelated to performance or cost is not a verdict on your work. The volume of people moving through this market is genuinely large, as our round up of global tech layoffs in 2026 shows, and our guide to running a job search with AI after a layoff is built for exactly this situation.

What Should You Do if Your Employer Looks Healthy but You Feel Exposed?

Start by separating financial risk from structural risk, because only one of them is visible in an earnings report. A company with a rising margin and a large buyback has no financial pressure to cut, so the risk that remains is structural, meaning the possibility that your function gets redesigned. Signals for that include a new executive in your function, a stated shift in strategy, or a reorganisation of teams around new priorities.

The second step is to build optionality before you need it. That means keeping a current record of what you have delivered, maintaining relationships outside your immediate team, and knowing what your skills are worth on the open market even when you are not looking. Nearly half of workers are quietly testing that market already, as our piece on the cracks appearing in job hugging describes, and the ones who fare best in a restructuring are usually the ones who had a sense of their options in advance.

People Also Asked

Q: How many people did Etsy lay off in 2026?

A: Approximately 220 employees, with most of the changes concentrated in product and engineering. Etsy expects headcount of roughly 1,600 people once the restructuring is substantially complete at the end of the third quarter.

Q: Did Etsy cut jobs because of artificial intelligence?

A: The company says no. The chief executive's memo states that "these decisions weren't driven by AI" and that the aim is "to combine talented people with powerful new technology and not replace one with the other". The memo does acknowledge that AI is changing which skills the company needs, which is a claim about role design rather than replacement.

Q: What severance is Etsy offering to affected staff?

A: At least 16 weeks of severance pay plus additional pay based on tenure, healthcare support for up to 12 months or a cash stipend outside the US, a payment recognising 2026 incentive compensation and near term equity vesting, accrued paid time off, and immigration support.
